A letter to my past self

Dear kid,

There are a few things I want to tell you and I need you to just trust me and follow my words - just this one time, okay? Okay, here it goes.

I need you to embrace change. I need you to understand that life consists of change. I really need you to understand that and please... do not try to fight it. I know you hate the idea of change and especially the process itself, but… well, tough. Whether you like it or not, it is going to be the only constant in your life, so get used to it.

Secondly... True love is much, much closer to home than you think.

You will spend countless nights fantasising about the day you will find true love. You dream of being embraced and kissed by your lover, walking down the aisle, holding your lover’s hand whilst walking down the beach, laughing and rejoicing life. Yes, these experiences are incredibly beautiful and don’t worry, you will go through it all and it will be magnificent! They will feel raw and vivid and invigorating and oh, so painful.

You will experience love in various ways. Ludovico Einaudi's music will take you expose you to your vulnerability in ways you cannot phantom and with each and every single book you read, you will feel pure, true love.

Yet, you will keep searching for that myth that is "true love". You will look in all the wrong places. Frankly, you could save yourself a significant amount of time if you just looked in the mirror. I mean really look - not glance, not critique, but look.

That blend of emotions including belonging, freedom, wildness, safety and being complete will arise as a flicker in your heart once you realise that true love is something you already have.

It is right… there. True love is IN you FOR you.

Let go and accept who you are, what you want, what you believe in and you will have found the truest love. No other love will ever compare to the feeling of self-acceptance!

Oh, and another thing. Trust your instinct. Always.

I don’t care how scary or how outrageous it might seem, go with your gut because there will be no instance where your gut will be wrong. Believe me. I wish there was.

As for everything else… you’ll figure it out. Eventually.
